Journal Reflection/Homework #1 deals with Victim rights, death notification and Sexual Assault. In addition you have the article on sexual assault -college campus and the Hunting Ground – college campus. Difficult subject for many particularly if you have ever been a victim of sexual assault. There is a great deal of “victim blaming” when it comes to sexual assault. As you have learned, the majority of sexual assaults are related to “date rape” and/or the victim and offender know each other. More so – I chose the article and focus of this discussion to sexual assault on college campus as you are college students. My guess, unfortunately, is that many of you know of someone who has been a victim of sexual assault making this a very important conversation.
As you are all also aware of – the majority of victims do not report their assault for numerous reasons. Part 1: Based on the text (chapter 6 and 8), the journal article and the Hunting Ground – how can we increase victims’ reporting of sexual assault (focusing on college students) as well as the prosecution of offenders. Keep in mind – (note from the documentary) we give out harsher punishments for cheating than we do for sexual assault. Part II – how do we change this narrative?
Be sure to answer both parts (details/specifics from all sources are required to earn full points)!
Question 2:
Chapter 6:
What is the VRA (Victims Right Amendment)?
Why should we focus our attention for victims’ rights at the state level?
What are 2 of the concerns that critics voiced over victims’ rights?
Chapter 7:
Briefly but be specific, describe the death notification process.
Chapter 8:
Briefly describe the changes to “rape” since the 1970s.
What is the purpose of shield provisions?
What is the SART approach and why is it important?
Journal Reflection Question:
