Instructions
By the end of this module, you will write a 10 to 15 page paper taking a stance on a current or ongoing issue in medical ethics. Some ideas for topics are listed below, but you are encouraged to come up with your own. Any topic that you wrote about for the Case Write-up can’t be used for this assignment.
Reminder, all students must clear their topic with the instructor before working on this assignment.
Sample topics:
CRISPR Gene Editing
Explain the facts of the situation
Note the ethical issues present in the case
Review the reactions of others to the case
Provide your own solution to the case, including an argument for it
Confront and respond to an objection to your stance
In contrast to the midterm case work-up submitted during Module 4, in this paper you are expected to provide your own opinion/stance/solution to the ethical issues raised by your topic.
You should consider this assignment to be a sort of augmented research paper. You should consult and cite reputable sources for the conflicts. Off the top of my head, good sources for many medical ethical issues are the following: The Hastings Center Report, American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), New England Journal of Medicine, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.
