This paper requires some outside research, with a minimum of 4 academic sources. Your paper should contain three key elements:
1. A thesis. That is, an argument that can be sustained throughout the length of your analysis. Your
thesis must be highlighted (e.g. underlined, bolded, or highlighted in some form).
2. Use of at least three sociological concepts used to execute your thesis.
3. Use of evidence (from the film, and/or from academic sources) to conduct your analysis and support
your thesis.
Sociological concepts are found in your textbook, my lectures, and in academic sources. Concepts help us to
organize our thinking about abstract topics, and they allow us to think in terms of explanation. While you do
not need to use theory, use of theory could be indicative of higher-level analysis and thinking. As mentioned,
this assignment will have you use outside academic sources; finding and using academic sources is a key
research skill that you will need to develop to be successful in academia and more generally. The academic
sources you use in this assignment can be used to help you discuss sociological concepts, or they may be drawn
upon as evidence to support your thesis. As always, you should endeavour to show us your sociological
imaginations. Your paper will partially be assessed on how well you use your outside sources, so don’t just
throw them into the paper and hope for the best – you need to use them to your advantage! Use them to help
make your argument better.
Your writing should be clear and to the point. Don’t waste space with unwieldy sentences, and fluff. You do
not need more than a few sentences to introduce your paper, and no more than a few sentences to conclude.
Format
Do not put extra spaces between your paragraphs, this is a waste of space. You should include page numbers,
and the following information in the header: your name, your TA’s name, and the phrase ‘SA150 Film
Analysis’. Do not include a title page. You must only use 12 point Times New Roman font or 11 point CMU
Serif font. Margins should be default (2.54 cm). Do not fiddle with margins or font sizes. Include a bibliography
(Chicago Author-Date style) and do not under any circumstances plagiarize.
