Question: “Is online fake news fuelling far right extremism”?
academic poster, 800/1000 words, This task engages your knowledge, understanding and creativity. You are expected to propose a solution to one of the challenges digital technology presents to society, either one of the issues we discuss in this course, or another relevant issue you identify and are interested in (but please make sure to discuss this with me). The solution could be a policy, governance regime, or a change in legislation, or you could provide a poster designed to introduce or clarify a web based tool or skill that will address a digital challenge. This should be something that you believe will be new to at least half of the class. If you choose this option you will be expected to:
1) explain why this tool or skill is useful, 2) explain how it can be used. The academic poster is a particular form of communication which centers on synthetic, precise attractive presentation (see on MyUni for more detailed information). In this case, your poster should include
Three sections:
1) An introductory paragraph ( not an abstract or summary which details your question or problem (e.g. fake news on social media as a threat to the functioning of democracy, 200 to 300 words) 2) A central paragraph fully detailing the question or problem relating it to theoretical debates (e.g. explaining why fake news are a threat to democracy using democratic theory, referring to evidence that shows the impact of fake news on voting and democratic debate, the
instrumental news of fake news and bots by third parties like foreign powers etc., 300 to 400 words) 3) Suggest a solution, either a policy change, a change in regulation, a technical solutions and so on and address here any obvious objection to your proposed solution (for example, introducing fact checking on dubious news on social media and addressing any concern that it is not appropriate for social media companies to meddle with their members speech). You are free to organise this content however you think best in terms of presentation, i.e. visual layout, colours, font, pictures etc.
